More news about Pepper!

It has now been two weeks since Pepper had her operation and she is healing well from the surgery. She's allowed off lead walks again and can go back to agility next week.  She was so delighted to be able to run around on our walks this weekend, and Ruby was very happy to have her little partner in crime back.

The results have come back from the tests they carried out on the stones and have been confirmed as Struvite stones that will most likely have been caused by an infection.  These stones are the most common and more easily managed than other types.

She had to have a sterile urine sample taken at the vet on Friday by having a needle inserted into her bladder - ouch!  We should get the results back next week, but the local tests they carried out at the vet showed a raised pH level which indicates that there is still an infection present.  They have given us an extended course of antibiotics, so hopefully they will work their magic over the next week.  She'll need to continue having her strict prescription diet until the infection has gone as this will prevent any new stones forming, but once she is better we should be able to return her to her normal diet.

We're so obsessed that we've now bought our own urine test strips so that we can monitor the pH level at home - the things we do as dog owners!

Here are a couple of pictures that show how well her wound has healed:

Pepper Update..

Pepper is recovering nicely from the operation.  She's much brighter and doesn't seem to appreciate that she has just had a major operation!  She's desperate to play with Ruby and we are having to keep our eye on her to prevent her jumping on and off the furniture.

We've been able to have a good look at the wound and can't believe how neat it is - we're so lucky to have such a great vet!  They've shaved a huge area on her tummy which must be cold so it's good that she's having to wear her onesie to keep her warm.

We're doing loads of research into bladder stones to get a better understanding of what causes them and how to prevent them coming back, but until we have confirmation of which type of stones she had we can't really do a great deal!

Here are some pictures of her wound:

Poorly Pepper has had to have an operation!

We've had a worrying time with our little Pepper!  Apologies for the 'toilet talk' in this post!

It started on Christmas Day when we noticed that she was trying to have a wee continually during our walk and  immediately thought she had a urinary tract infection (UTI).  We called the emergency vet for some advice as we were worried about leaving it until our normal vet was open again on 27th December.  They gave us some advice and said we should be OK to wait until 27th unless she took a turn for the worse.

On 27th we got an appointment at the vet and she agreed that she thought it was a UTI so gave us a course of antibiotics.  Sadly we didn't see much change over the week so called the vet for another appointment where she suggested doing a bladder scan to check for crystals and bladder stones.  We had to leave Pepper at the vet - it was awful!  We made ourselves really busy taking the Christmas decorations down in record time and eventually got a call to say we could go and pick Pepper up.  She couldn't find any bladder stones and they hadn't found any crystals in her sample so she decided that the best course of action was a different antibiotic.

After a few days she appeared to have improved and by the end of the week she wasn't trying to go continually so we really thought she had got better, but unfortunately we spoke too soon.  After another couple of days she was struggling again so we called the vet to see what she would recommend.  We took another sample in for them to analyse and this time they found crystals so wanted to do another bladder scan.  Unfortunately the scan revealed at least one bladder stone so their recommendation was surgery to have it removed.

On Thursday Pepper was admitted for the operation - another worrying day!  We got a call at lunch time to say they had found one large stone, approximately 1cm diameter, and several smaller ones which they had removed, and that Pepper had come round and was recovering nicely.  We could pick her up at 6pm - phew!

We saw the vet first so that she could explain what she had done and give us the post op instructions.  She showed us the x-rays that had been taken and the large stone was a significant size in her little bladder. She also commented on how brilliantly Pepper had coped with everything that had been done to her and that she couldn't believe how little fuss she had made about the pain she must be experiencing.

She went and got Pepper who was subdued but clearly pleased to see us, and managed a little tail wag!  Ian and I are so relieved to have her home - she's such a character that the house just isn't the same when she's not here.

Here she is snuggled on the sofa in her little onesie:

First Show of 2015 - Scrambles

11/1/2015

It was good to get back to agility after the Christmas break and our first show of 2015 was at Scrambles.

It was really cold but the ground was surprisingly good after a week of rain!  I decided to run the first agility NFC so that I could reinforce Pepper's contacts and as expected she flew over the A-Frame without even thinking about stopping!  Back over again and into a beautiful 2on2off position which got her lots of treats as a reward, and was followed by an equally good Dog Walk.  The rest of it was really good!

Jumping next and a pretty tight course that needed some handling.  Unfortunately she knocked the first pole but the rest of it went really well so I was pretty pleased.

I ran the second Agility for competition and was delighted to get great contacts and a lovely clear round.

Finally the Steeplechase - another tight course and we got caught out on a box with Pepper taking a side jump instead of the one straight ahead.  This has happened before so definitely something to practice in training!  I then lost my way so overall we made a bit of a hash of it!

Really pleased to have won 1st place for the Agility run - our first rosette for 2015 - it's been a while since we got a clear in agility and I needed to test her before our first KC show in a couple of weeks!
